Abstract

Tittel: Erfaringer og opplevelser med tvang hos helsepersonell og pasienter Introduksjon/bakgrunn: Tvang og tvangsbruk er et omstridt tema. Det er forankret i det norske lovverket, og det eksisterer omfattende forskning og studier rundt temaet. Forskning og lovverk har et gjengående fokus på å redusere og forebygge bruken av tvang, men det foreligger anledning til subjektive vurderinger for utøvelse av tvang i lovverket.

Hensikt: Hensikten med denne studien er å undersøke hvordan helsepersonellets og pasienters egne opplevelser med tvang kan være med på å forebygge bruken av tvang.

Metode: Oppgaven anvender metoden litteraturstudie, og fordyper seg i fem ulike vitenskapelige forskningsartikler, i tillegg til annen aktuell litteratur.

Resultat: De samlede resultatene til de fem forskningsartiklene gav funn om pasienters og helsepersonells subjektive opplevelse ved bruk av tvang. Resultatene i artiklene ble bakgrunnen for fire hovedtemaer som ble diskutert i studien: 1. Erfaringer, 2. Relasjon, 3. Kommunikasjon og Samhandling, 4. Autonomi.

Konklusjon: Både pasienter og helsepersonell gjennomgikk negative emosjonelle påkjenninger ved gjennomføring av tvang. Mangel på tillit, gode relasjoner, kommunikasjon og samarbeid var de mest gjengående faktorene som forsterket de negative opplevelsene. Relasjons- og kommunikasjonskompetanse blir derfor viktig for å forebygge negative opplevelser hos begge parter, gjennom å skape en god relasjon. Dette vil også påvirke vurderingen til bruk av tvang. Videre tiltak blir faglig utvikling hos ansatte, og undersøke andre tillitsskapende tiltak som alternativer til tvang.

Title: The experiences and understanding with coercion in healthcare professionals and patients

Introduction/Background: Coercion and coercive interventions are a controversial topic. It is rooted in Norwegian legislation, and there is extensive research and studies on the subject. Research and legislation have an ongoing focus on reducing and preventing the use of coercion, but there is possibility for subjective assessments in the legislation of when to use coercive measures.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate how the healthcare workers and patients' own experiences of coercion can help to prevent the use of coercive measures.

Method: The thesis uses the method literature study, and delves into five different scientific research articles, in addition to other current literature.

Results: The combined results of the five research articles provided findings on patients and healthcare professionals subjective experience when using coercion. The results in the articles were the background of four main topics discussed in the study: 1. Experiences, 2. Relationship, 3. Communication and Interaction, 4. Autonomy.

Conclusion: Both patients and healthcare professionals experienced emotional stress during the execution of coercion. Lack of trust, good relationships, communication and cooperation were the most common factors that reinforced the negative experiences. Relationship and communication skills are therefore important to prevent negative experiences for both parties, by creating a good relationship. This will also affect the assessment of the use of coercion. Further measures will be professional development among employees, and further examine other confidence-building measures as alternatives to coercion.
