Nøkkelord: Vold i nære relasjoner, barn, utvikling, tilknytning, emosjoner
Summary Title: What consequences does violence in close relationships have on the development of children and young people? Several children daily experience violence at the arena that is supposed to be their safe place, the children´s home. The people who are to give the child security and care do not manage it, and the consequences can be many and extensive for the child. The children who are exposed to violence can be found in kindergarten and school, and for some in mental health care at a later point in life. Knowledge and competence are therefore highly relevant to the intellectual disability nurse in this field. The intellectual disability nurse is supposed to provide the necessary help to the vulnerable individuals, as well as the opportunity to work preventively for and to minimize the consequences for the victims of violence. The purpose of the study is to examine the effects of violence in close relationships on the development of children and young people, as consequences are particularly related to emotions, emotion regulation and attachment. Literature study has been used as a method in this thesis, and five different articles have been selected as a data basis for the results of the thesis. The results from the five articles formed the basis for the three main topics in the discussion section: 1. Emotions and emotion regulation, 2. Attachment, 3. Internalizing and externalizing behavior. With these themes as a base, the literature study could show that children who are exposed to violence had greater emotional dysregulation, which in turn was associated with negative interactions with peers and social challenges. Disorganized and insecure attachment were elements that were also affected in children who were exposed to violence. Later in life this could be expressed through self-harm and suicide. Internalizing and externalizing behavioral difficulties in children were also consequences that could occur in some. The internalizing and externalizing behavioral difficulties could also be seen in the context of challenges related to emotion regulation. The literature study also shows how Sameroff´s transactional model can be used to understand why the child shows a certain behavior. Keywords: Violence in close relationships, children, development, attachment, emotions
