This project takes on an analysis of the teacher education in physical education and sports at NTNU. Through interviews with two employees who are working with the specific teacher education on a daily basis, the project seeks to give insight into the teacher education. Central to the master’s thesis is Foucault’s perspective of power (Foucault, 1999; Aakvaag, 2008). This perspective contributes to contextualizing the informant’s claims. Additionally, the thesis includes a brief document analysis addressing documents that regulate the teacher education. These documents include the legal regulation and the national guidelines implemented by national actors. These national actors, together with the local actors, are central to understanding the power affecting the education.
The informants express clearly that they experience exercise of power or, more precisely, a lack of exercise of power. Especially from their respective institutes. The informants experience that they are not given the resources needed to secure a better teacher education. In the power perspective, one can clearly see this as the biopower not listening to the panoptic institutions. This could contribute to a weakening of knowledge production which can weaken the biopower. A bigger challenge could be that the teacher education is damaged which can affect the competence of future teachers in the school system.
Discipline is a key within Foucault’s power term (Foucault, 1999). An essential point in this project is that the teacher educators discipline students and are being disciplined by the local and national actors. The disciplining of students consists, among other things, of mandatory assignments and attendance as the teacher educators describe it. Further, attention is given to an employee interview between teacher educator and student as a tool to force a potential dropout of students not wanting to attend the education. The teacher educators point out periodic evaluation of the study program and challenges related to the bureaucracy, such as self-discipline.
