Sialic acids are a family of saccharides which some viruses utilize to bind to cells. The focus of this literature review is to highlight the binding between viruses and sialic acids. Searching through scientific databases we found a plethora of different viruses who utilize sialic acids to recognize and infect cells. The viruses included in this literature review are: enterovirus, influenzavirus, adenovirus, coronavirus, torovirus and reovirus. This review describes the viruses, the virus-sialic acid bindings and to which sialic acid each virus preferentially binds. The purpose of collecting information about how sialic acids are used by viruses is so that it can be used in future research for the development of antiviral medications. In this literature review the most relevant sialic acid is Neu5Ac because it was the most common one utilized by the viruses.
