Increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases is a contributing factor to global warming and climate change, CO2 being the major one. To mitigate the increasing amount of CO2, carbon capture has been proposed to reduce CO2 emissions to the atmosphere caused by human activities. Adsorption of CO2 from flue gas in post-combustion shows promising qualities to replace the absorption methods that is utilized in the industry today since it can reduce the total energy consumption due to the readily implementation to existing industries. This paper will focus on whether zeolites, specifically zeolite 13X, can be an efficient CO2 capture agent for post-combustion technologies in the industry. Zeolite 13X shows promising adsorption capacities, but it struggles with sensitivity towards moisture and high temperatures. If the material were to be used as an adsorbent material in the industry, it may be necessary to have the material undergo some modifications to increase the adsorption capacity and selectivity towards CO2. Researchers have found that by impregnating the zeolite with amine or exchanging some Na+ with Li+ can contribute to enhance adsorption capacity and selectivity. Acid-activation increases the pore-volume, which ultimately leads to increased adsorption capacity and pre-treatment of the flue gas reduces the sensitivity towards moisture. It is also possible to combine pressure swing and temperature swing adsorption methods to further enhance the efficiency of the process. Therefore, zeolite 13X with some modifications could be an effective adsorbent material towards the capture of CO2.
