Summary Insomnia is a growing health problem among workers and in the general population worldwide. Challenges related to the corona pandemic, including work pressure and the risk of infection, may have increased the risk of sleep problems in workers with critical societal functions. This includes, among others, workers in healthcare, education, labour- and welfare services and emergency services. Insomnia can contribute to reduced performance at work, accidents, impaired mental and physical health, sickness absence and disability. The consequences do not only affect the person who experiences the sleep disorder but can also affect the organization they work in and important societal functions. It is therefore important to obtain more knowledge about the factors that can contribute to insomnia among workers in these occupations. The aim of this this thesis was to investigate at compare factors that can predict insomnia in workers employed in occupations with critical societal functions. The three articles included in this thesis show four main findings: 1) The personality trait neuroticism was the strongest and most stable predictor of future insomnia symptoms of the examined variables. This indicates that individual dispositions play an important role in the development of insomnia; 2) Stress and overcommitment to work had stronger positive associations with insomnia symptoms than job demands had. This indicates that it is not the demands themselves that are most harmful for employee sleep, but rather how the individuals react to and copes with stressors; 3) Neuroticism, stress and overcommitment explained the largest proportion of variance in insomnia symptoms, whereas job demands and job resources had considerably weaker and more unstable associations to insomnia; 4) Worrying about health consequences related to the corona pandemic can be more harmful for employee sleep than job demands during the pandemic. The thesis highlights the need for measures that take individual differences in cognitive, emotional, and behavioural responses to stressors into account when trying to prevent insomnia and promote sleep health among workers.en_US
