Green’s funksjonenes rolle i kvantetransport blir deretter gjennomgått i detalj. To algoritmer for numerisk beregning av Green’s funksjonene blir fremlagt.
In this thesis, we have generalized the recursive Green's function approach to study the charge and spin currents, including their spatial distribution, in graphene nanoribbons with spin-orbit coupling. In order to simulate a realistic system, we have incorporated the honeycomb arrangement of graphene by employing a tight-binding model with nearest-neighbour hopping. To be specific, we have considered two-probe systems where a graphene nanoribbon with Rashba spin-orbit coupling is placed between a polarized source lead and an unpolarized drain lead.
First, the electronic properties of graphene are introduced, and the band structures in presence and absence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling are obtained from tight-binding calculations. The role of Green's functions in describing quantum transport is then discussed in detail. Two algorithms for numerical computation of the Green's functions are presented. The first algorithm is the decimation method for calculating the surface Green's function of semi-infinite leads. The second is the recursive Green's function (RGF) algorithm, which is applied to calculate the full Green's function of graphene ribbons in two-lead setups, from which we may extract sample conductance and local currents and densities.
Next, our numerical approach is validated by re-obtaining previous results for the conductivity and spatial current profile in graphene ribbons without spin-orbit coupling, incorporating zigzag and armchair boundary conditions. Finally, we present our results for spatial dependence of spin polarization, spatial profiles of charge and spin currents and charge conductivity, all in presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We observe spin precession, and from our results we make an approximation for the corresponding spatial period as a function of the spin-orbit coupling strength, providing a tool for determining the presence and magnitude of Rashba spin-orbit coupling experimentally.
