The γ-pyrone Fusolanone B (28), previously isolated by fungi, has shown potential use as anantibiotic. In this project retrosynthesis inspired by biosynthesis of polyketides has beencarried out, and two different reaction pathways for synthesizing Fusolanone B wereinvestigated and adjusted. Due to the chirality of the target compound, Evans auxiliareswere used in combination with aldol reactions, followed up by Barton-McCombiedeoxygenation. The deoxygenation turned out to be problematic for the second reactionpathway, where the olefin was destroyed. Attempts to avoid the problem were made, butunsuccessfully.
