Microalgae can contribute to sustainable and ethical solutions to a number of global challenges. The algae can be used as food for humans, dietary supplements, animal feed, biofuels, sewage treatment, as well as natural producers of dyes, hydrogen and ingredients in cosmetics. During this thesis, the participants have gathered experience and expertise through the cultivation of the species Isochrysis and Tetraselmis in the laboratory at NTNU in Ålesund, as well as assessed the situation with microalgae as health-supplements in Norway. The first part of the practical work consisted of upscaling, where cultures of both species were grown and scaled up from 40 ml to 8 l of dense culture over four weeks. In the next experiment, lipids were extracted and the fatty acid composition was determined using gas chromatography. The results showed promising percentages of several unsaturated fatty acids, which are attractive for human consumption. Finally, both species underwent nutrient stress, grown with 50% and 150% nitrogen and phosphorus content to explore how it affected growth and fatty acid composition. The results showed similar growth in the cultures, as in previous research, where the growth in the flasks with 150% phosphorus and nitrogen was large. There is a lot of research on microalgae in Norway for various purposes. The potential for the production of health-supplement products exists, but it is currently expensive and is sold mainly in healthy food stores. A few players grow microalgae commercially. Both indoor and outdoor cultivation can be used depending on the purpose of the algae, but photobioreactors are best suited for human consumption. With an increasing focus on health and sustainability, proper marketing, together with technological innovation, financial investments and reduced production costs, this can make microalgae as health supplements more attractive, commercial products in Norway and internationally.
