På grunn av at seksualitet fremdeles er et tabubelagt tema, møter sykepleiere ofte utfordringer ved kommunikasjon rundt seksualitet. Økt kunnskap vedrørende tematikken kan tilrettelegge for egenomsorg, og normalisere kommunikasjon angående seksuell helse.

Hensikt: Literaturstudiens hensikt er å kartlegge seksuelle utfordinger som pasienter med MS kan oppleve. Videre undersøke hvordan en sykepleier kan imøtekomme pasientens seksuelle utfordring, og avdekke hvorfor dette er et utfordrende tema å snakke om.

Metode: Det benyttes kvalitative- og kvantitative vitenskapelige arktikkler samt relevant fagliteratur for å svare på problemstillingen. Systematisk søk etter vitenskapelig artikler ble gjennomført i databasene CINAHL, Medline (Ovid) og PubMed (Ovid), derav fem artikler ble inkludert.

Resultat: Resultatene viser at pasienter med MS opplever at det er manglende informasjon og veiledning fra helsepersonell i møte med seksuelle utfordringer. Videre føler flere av pasientene at det inngår i en sykepleierens ansvarsområde å initiere til samtale om tematikken. Sykepleiere viser manglende kunnskap og selvtillit vedrørende det å kommunisere om seksuell helse. Holdninger og barierer hos sykepleier og pasient som påvirker komminkasjon blir presentert.

Konklusjon: Litteraturstudien konkluderer med at det foreligger manglende kunnskap og kompetanse rundt temaet seksualitet hos sykepleiere. Pasienter med MS har et stort behov for informasjon og veiledning vedrørende seksuelle utfordringer de står ovenfor. Derfor vil sykepleierens faglig kompetanse være deres veiledende og informerende rolle i kommunikasjon. PLISSIT-modellen kan anses å være et kommunikasjonsverktøy som kan bistå sykepleiere i samtale om seksuelle utfordringer.

Background: Patients suffering from multiple sclerosis can experience sexuall diffeculties, and there will therefor be a need for information and guidance concerning sexuall health. Nurses encounter challenges relating to communication about sexuality, because it´s still seen as a taboo topic. Increased knowledge concerning this topic can facilitate self-care engagement, and normalize communication regarding sexuall health.

Aim: This study aims to mapping of sexual diffeculties wich patients suffering from MS can experience. Furthermore the aim is to examine how a nurse can accommodate patients´ sexuall dysfunction, and uncover why this topic is so challenging to talk about.

Method: There have been used qualitative- and quantitative scientific studies combined with relevant literature to answer the aim of this study. Systematic search for scientific studies was accomplished in the databases CINAHL, Medline (Ovid) and PubMed (Ovid), thereof five studies were included.

Results: The results show that patients suffering for MS experience a lack of information and guidance from health care professionals encountering sexuall diffeculties. Furthermore, several of the patients believe that it is a part of nurse´s area of responsibility to initiate a conversation about this topic. Nurses show a lack of knowledge and self-confidence regarding communicating about sexual health. Attitudes and barriers in nursing and patient affecting communication are presented.

Conclusion: This study concludes that nurses lack knowledge and competence around the topic of sexuality. Patients with MS have an increased need for information and guidance regarding the sexual diffeculties they face. Therefore, the nurse's expertise will be their guiding and informative role in communication. The PLISSIT model can be considered as a communication tool that can assist nurses in conversations about sexual challenges.
