Title: Nurses’ role in child abuse in close relations. Date: 21.05.21 Authors: Lovise Sveen Edquist, Kristine Aarnes Midtli, Cecilie Kronberget Knutsen Supervisor: Merethe Furnes Keywords: Nurse, role, child abuse, children, anamneses, detection, reporting and knowledge Number of pages/words: 10 833 Number of appendix: 0 Background: Physical abuse of children is a global problem. As a nurse it is important to have the knowledge to identify signs and symptoms of physical child abuse. The professional ethics guidelines are important in helping the nurse to practise moral and proper nursing. The regulation of nursing education was changed in 2019 which emphasizes that nurses should have insight in problems such as violence, and knowledge about how to treat or refer these patients. This creates requirements for the nurse when encountering children that experience abuse. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine and illuminate the nurses’ role when dicovering physical abuse of children in close relations. Methods: This is a literature study. The data in this study is obtained from several databases within health science. Relevant literature, laws and guidelines were used. 7 articles were included. Result: In the analysis of the 7 articles, 5 main themes were identified that illuminates our issue. The main themes were: Signs and anamneses, the nurses’ knowledge, nursing practise, skills and tools used for identification and reporting. Conclusion: The nurses’ role in child abuse consists of multiple things. Expectations, attitudes and work tasks are factors that influence the nurses’ role. Our role involves identification of signs and symptoms, communication with the child and their legal guardians and reporting of suspicion of abuse. An increased focus and competence are important in this work.
