Hvordan kan sykepleier sikre god kommunikasjon med pasienter med etnisk minoritetsbakgrunn?

Abstract

Bakgrunn: Norge har de siste 60 årene hatt en økende innvandring. Over 800 000 av den norske befolkningen er innvandrere, noe som gjør Norge til et multikulturelt samfunn. Disse pasientene vil vi også møte i helsevesenet, og dette kan by på kommunikasjonsproblemer. Som sykepleier er du pliktig til å sikre at pasienten forstår informasjonen som blir gitt.

Hensikt: Hensikten med denne oppgaven er å se på hvordan sykepleiere kan sikre god kommunikasjon med pasienter med ulik etnisk bakgrunn. Vi ønsker å finne hvilke tiltak sykepleier kan utføres for å ivareta pasientens behov.

Metode: I denne oppgaven er det brukt litteraturstudie som metode. Det ble gjennomført systematiske søk i databasene Medline Ovid, Cinahl og PubMed. Det er brukt fem vitenskapelige studier som står i tråd med våre inklusjons- og eksklusjonskriterier.

Resultat: Vi har kommet frem til tre områder vi mener er med på å sikre god kommunikasjon mellom pasienter av etnisk minoritetsbakgrunn og sykepleier; holdninger hos sykepleier, kulturell kompetanse hos sykepleier og kommunikasjonstiltak i møte med språkbarrierer. Vi har også kommet frem til hvorfor man skal bruke kvalifiserte tolk.

Konklusjon: Holdninger sykepleier har i møte med pasienter med etnisk minoritetsbakgrunn er med på å påvirke relasjonen mellom sykepleier og pasient. Denne relasjonen påvirker igjen kommunikasjonen, da pasient vil føle tillit til sykepleier. Sykepleier må også ha kunnskap om ulike kulturer for å kunne møte pasienten med respekt og tilrettelegging. Det er viktig for sykepleieren å ha kunnskap om ulike sykdomssyn, og tradisjoner og normer knyttet til dette. Gjennom målrettet kommunikasjon kan sykepleier hente ut den informasjonen hun trenger. Bruk av tolk i møte med språkbarrierer er et godt hjelpemiddel dersom tolken blir anvendt korrekt. Sykepleier må vite at familie og andre pårørende ikke skal tolke. Dette kan true pasientsikkerheten.

Background: For the past 60 years, Norway has had an increasing immigration. More than 800 000 of the norwegian population are immigrants. This makes Norway a multicultural society. We will meet these people in the healthcare system, which may create communication problems. As a nurse you are obliged to make sure the patient understands the information that is given.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to look at how nurses can ensure good communication with patients with an etnich minority background. We wish to find out what measures nurses can do to ensure that the patient's needs are secured.

Method: In this paper we used literature study, and we did a systematic search in the databases Medline Ovid, Cinahl and PubMed. We found five articles which are in line with our inclusion and exclusion criterias.

Result: We found three areas which we think will ensure good communication between nurses and etnich minority patients; the nurses ́attitude, cultural competence and communication measures. We also found out why you should use a qualified interpreter.

Conclusion: The attitudes of the nurses´ in the encounter with patients with an ethnic minority background, will affect the relationship between the nurse and the patient. This relationship will then affect the communication because of the trust the patient feels towards the nurse. The nurse needs knowledge about different cultures, so she can meet the patient with respect and adjustment. It is also important for the nurse to have knowledge about different views of illness, and traditions linked to this. With purposeful communication, the nurse can get the information from the patient that she needs. The use of an interpreter is a good tool for meeting patients with limited language ability. The interpreter needs to be qualified, if not the patient's safety can be threatened.
