The occurrence of aggression in patients with dementia is 40 percent. Ego-strengthening nursing is used in nursing patients with psychosis. Mental health is improved by using various measures that all play on different attitudes and psychological functions with dementia patients. There is a correlation between psychosis and dementia. As a result, conclusions can be drawn suggesting that ego-strengthening nursing can be beneficial in nursing patients with a dementia diagnosis.
PurposeThe purpose of this literature study is to shed light on various factors that can prevent aggressive behaviors in patients with dementia in nursing homes, with particular emphasis on nursing strategies with an ego-strengthening nursing approach.
MethodThis study has applied literature study as its main method. To answer our bachelor thesis a systematic search in both Medline (Ovid) and PsycINFO has been conducted. Through this approach, scientific literature has been found which has all been thoroughly analyzed. For the purpose of this study, six scientifically articles have been selected based on its relevance, which in turn has been carefully analyzed.
ResultsThe results are presented in the following order: factors with the nurse, factors in nursing, factors with the next of kin and factors in the environment.
ConclusionAggressive behavior can be prevented through communication and sufficient competence in nurses. In addition, people-centered care and primary nursing can also be good methods in preventing aggression. Intimate nursing situations can cause aggression. Through having proper knowledge of how to handle these situations, nurses can better prevent aggressive behavior. In addition, by including and using next of kin, the environment, force and shielding, the nurse may also better prevent aggression. Furthermore, it has also been shown that ego-strengthening principles can be useful tools in nursing aggressive patients with dementia diagnosis.
