Topic question: What is the role of the radiographer if there are signs of physical child abuse and what physical injuries may indicate that the child has been physically abused?
Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate which skeletal injuries and skin injuries can be seen as a result of phsyical child abuse. We want and hope that this thesis can increase the level of competence amongst radiographers, radiography students and other health personnel.
Method: We have used a qualitative literature study as a method, where we use current theory and studies. Nine articles are included. These nine articles were found after searches in three different databases. The articles are presented and then the results are discussed.
Result: In the results section, the focus was on the role of the radiographer when it comes to children who are suspected to have been physically abused, and the skin injuries and skeletal fractures that may be associated with child abuse. The injuries that are highly likely to be a result of child abuse are rib fractures and metaphyseal fractures in young children.
Conclusion: We conclude that there are some skin injuries and skeletal fractures that give higher suspicion of child abuse. It is the type of injury, age of the child and whether the extent of the injury matches the story that determines whether abuse is the case or not. Radiographers have a role to play in detecting and reporting child abuse.
