dc.description.abstract | Topic (research question): When determining amount of iodinated contrast media, what are the advantages of using a body-composition tailored dosing protocol instead of a weight-based dosing protocol?
Purpose: To investigate the quality of two protocols for calculating the dose of iodinated contrast media for patients undergoing an abdominal CT-scan.
Method: Qualitative literature study with analysis of scientific articles.
Results: During the portal venous phase, a strong correlation was exhibited between mean hepatic enhancement and the body indexes TBW (r = - 0.69 +/- 0.05), LBW (r = - 0.68 +/- 0.09) and BSA (r = - 0.73 +/- 0.09). The use of a fixed-dose-protocol leads to interpatient variability.
Conclusion: A body-composition tailored protocol may reduce interpatient variability in terms of mean hepatic enhancement and lead to less consumption of contrast media.
