Kunsten å spre ekstrem ideologi

Abstract

I Politiets sikkerhetstjenestes nasjonale trusselvurdering for 2021 tydeliggjøres det at høyreekstrem propaganda som ligger lett tilgjengelig på nett bidrar til å øke risikoen for høyreekstrem radikalisering, blant annet gjennom retorikken og budskapet som benyttes på slike fora. Den nordiske motstandsbevegelsen (DNM) er en nynazistisk organisasjon som har en offentlig tilgjengelig hjemmeside, Frihetskamp, hvor dagsaktuelle nyhetsartikler publiseres. Med utgangspunkt i blant annet PSTs trusselvurdering, svarer denne masteroppgaven på problemstillingen Hvordan fremstilles Den nordiske motstandsbevegelsens ideologi gjennom nyhetsartiklene som publiseres på deres hjemmeside? I tillegg undersøkes de språklige virkemidlene DNM benytter for å overbevise lesere om sitt budskap.

Ideologi i denne oppgaven forstås som «et sett med ideer som gir grunnlag for organisert politisk handling, enten ment for å bevare, modifisere eller velte det eksisterende maktsystemet». Dermed vil oppgaven svare på hvordan DNM viser hvordan verden fungerer, hvordan de representerer en ønsket fremtid, og DNMs forklaring for hvordan politisk endring kan og bør oppnås.

For å svare på oppgavens problemstilling er retorisk analyse valgt som metode. Oppgavens empiriske materiale består av 24 nyhetsartikler publisert på Frihetskamp i perioden mars 2019 til juni 2020. Datamaterialet fra disse nyhetsartiklene presenteres i tre analysekapitler. I oppgavens første analysekapittel analyseres nyhetsartiklene i lys av DNMs etosappell, for å undersøke hvilken rolle troverdighet spiller i nyhetsartiklene på Frihetskamp, og hvordan DNM og andre mediekanaler fremstilles i artiklene. I det andre kapitlet studerer jeg DNMs patosappell på Frihetskamp, hvor eksemplene viser hvordan DNM appellerer til lesernes følelser. De sentrale temaene for kapitlet består av koblingene DNM gjør til at vi lever i et overvåkingssamfunn, deres bruk av krigsmetaforer og hvordan det de benevner som «homolobbyen» fremstilles som en trussel. Oppgavens tredje og siste analysekapittel undersøkes DNMs appell til lesernes fornuft i artikler som handler om rase og rasisme, gjennom logosappell.

Studien viser at DNM tar bevisste grep for å fremstå som en seriøs nyhetsformidler gjennom Frihetskamp. Samtidig tar virkemidlene som brukes i nyhetsartiklene sikte på å skape splittelse og motsetninger i samfunnet, og viser til ulike trusler samfunnet står overfor. Analysen av nyhetsartiklene på Frihetskamp viser at DNM formidler en ideologi som tar utgangspunkt i at den hvite sivilisasjonen er truet. DNM ønsker et etnisk homogent Norden, og måten å oppnå dette på er å rekruttere andre til å engasjere seg i kampen for den hvite rase. Det endelige målet er å velte det eksisterende maktsystemet, og Frihetskamp brukes som et virkemiddel på veien.

In the Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) national threat assessment of 2021, right-wing propaganda and its availability online has been assessed as a contributor to an increase in the risk of right-wing extremist radicalisation. Particularly crucial in this assessment is the general rhetoric and content found and utilized in online forums of such kinds. The Nordic Resistance Movement (NRM) is a neo-Nazi organisation which operates with a public website, Frihetskamp (fight for freedom), where contemporary news articles are published. Taking the threat assessment of the PST into account, this thesis elaborates on How the Nordic Resistance Movement presents their ideology through the news articles on their website? This thesis will therefore focus on analysing how the NRM uses language and rhetoric to convey their message and convince their readers.

The definition of ideology will throughout this thesis be understood as “a set of ideas that provides the basis for organized political action, whether this is intended to preserve, modify or overthrow the existing system of power”. Thus, this thesis will give an answer to how the NRM views the world, how they believe the future should be, and the way political change can and should be obtained.

A rhetorical analysis is the method chosen to answer the research question of this thesis. The empirical data of the paper is 24 selected news articles published between March 2019 to June 2020 from Frihetskamp. The material is presented through three chapters of analysis. In the first chapter, the articles are analysed by looking at the NRM’s ethos appeal. This addresses what role credibility plays in Frihetskamp’s articles, as well as how the NRM presents other media outlets. The second chapter moves on to assess the pathos appeal of the website. In this part the analysis reveals how the organisation appeals to the readers’ emotions. The central themes in this chapter consist of how the NRM views our society as one of a surveillance society, their use of war metaphors, and how they regard the “gay lobby” (“homolobbyen”) as a threat to society. The paper’s third and final chapter of analysis looks at how the NRM appeals to the readers logic and reason in articles which focuses on race and racism through logos appeal.

This study shows that the NRM, through Frihetskamp, is consciously trying to conduct themselves in a manner where they can be perceived as a serious and legitimate news website. The methods of their news articles aim at highlighting threats and polarizing society. The analysis conducted shows that the NRM conveys an ideology which is based on their belief of a threat towards the white civilization. The NRM wants an ethnical homogeneous Northern region, and the best way to reach that goal is by recruiting others to commit to the fight for the white race. The final goal is to overthrow the existing system of power, and Frihetskamp is used for those purposes.
