What Is the Ethical Distinction Between Continuous Deep Sedation and Euthanasia?

Abstract

Denne oppgaven undersøker den etiske debatten om palliativ sedasjon og eutanasi. Det er snart 30 år siden klinikkere først introduserte begrepet "terminal sedasjon" til den akademiske litteraturen på tidlig 90-tallet. Selv om nye retningslinjer beskriver den praktiske forskjellen mellom palliativ sedasjon og eutanasi, så blir den etiske forskjellen fremdeles debatert. Det dominante synspunktet er at de er to moralsk forskjellige intervensjoner. Leger syntes generelt at palliativ sedasjon er god medisinsk praksis i riktige tilfeller, samtidig som de beskriver en større skepsis til eutanasi. Denne oppgaven vil forsøke å identifisere kjerneargumentene som blir brukt til å separere palliativ sedasjon fra eutanasi, og undersøke deres styrker og svakheter ved hjelp av normative teorier og metoder.

This paper aims to examine the ethical debate concerning palliative sedation and euthanasia. It is now nearly 30 years since clinicians first introduced the term terminal sedation to the academic literature in the early 1990s. While new guidelines describe the practical differences between palliative sedation and euthanasia, the ethical difference remains debated. The dominant view is that they are two morally distinct practices. Physicians generally consider palliative sedation good practice in appropriate cases, while expressing far more reluctance against euthanasia. This article will attempt to identify and investigate the core arguments used in separating palliative from euthanasia and try to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses using common normative theories and methods.
