We show that the Hunter–Saxton equation ut+uux=14(∫x−∞dμ(t,z)−∫∞xdμ(t,z)) and μt+(uμ)x=0 has a unique, global, weak, and conservative solution (u,μ) of the Cauchy problem on the line.
