Kommunikasjon når sykehjemspasienten har minoritetsbakgrunn

Abstract

Å flytte til sykehjem kan oppleves vanskelig og som et brudd med tidligere liv. For personer med minoritetsbakgrunn kan overgangen være ekstra utfordrende. Kommunikasjon med pasienten er en forutsetning for at helsepersonell kan yte god omsorg på sykehjem, men dersom pasienten har minoritetsbakgrunn kan kommunikasjonen utfordres. Problemstillingen er «Hvilke faktorer kan påvirke kommunikasjon mellom helsepersonell og sykehjemspasienter med minoritetsbakgrunn?», og hensikten med oppgaven er å øke min kunnskap for å bli en bedre vernepleier også ovenfor pasienter og brukere med minoritetsbakgrunn. Metoden er litteraturstudie, og fem nyere kvalitative forskningsartikler benyttes i oppgaven. Resultatene viser at det er mange faktorer som ser ut til å påvirke kommunikasjonen, men sentralt står tre hovedtemaer. Disse er betydningen av språk, nonverbal kommunikasjon, samt individuelle tilpasninger til pasientene. For å kunne nå overordnede politiske målsettinger om at alle eldre skal ha et godt tilbud på sykehjem, er det viktig at helsepersonell ikke overser behovene til pasienter med minoritetsbakgrunn.

The experience of moving to a nursing home can be difficult and feel like a break with one’s past life. For people with minority backgrounds, the transition can be extra challenging. Communication with the patient is a prerequisite for healthcare personnel to be able to provide good care in nursing homes, but when the patients have a minority background communication can be challenging. The main question in this study is “What factors can affect communication between healthcare personnel and nursing home patients with minority backgrounds?". The aim is to increase my knowledge to provide better care to patients with minority backgrounds. The method is a literature study, and five recent qualitative research articles are used in the thesis. The results show a number of factors that appear to affect communication, with three main themes standing out. These are the importance of language, non-verbal communication, as well as individual adaptations to the patients. In order to achieve overall political goals for all elderly people to receive good care in nursing homes, healthcare personnel must not forget about the needs of patients with minority backgrounds.
