Introduction: Sleep disorders are a major problem among patients with schizophrenia. To ensure better quality of sleep, there are several non-medical measures the patient can use, with the help of a nurse. Aim: The purpose of a literature study is to elucidate why good sleep quality is important for patients with mental illness, targeted at schizophrenia-diagnosed patients. Method: This thesis is a literature study. Where structured searches have been reviewed, that have resulted in five research articles. These research articles have been analyzed. Results: The Literature Study Has found several non-medical measures that nurses can use to improve the patient's sleep. The results showed the use of cognitive therapy, environmental therapy, intervention in the daily rhythm, activity, sleep diary, sleep mapping, motivation and guidance as good measures. Conclusion: The use of sleep mapping tools as sleep diary will give the nurse a better overview to motivate and guide the patient towards measures. The use of cognitive therapy and environmental therapy, as well as activity and intervention in circadian rhythm, can prove to have a positive effect on the quality of sleep in patients with schizophrenia.
