Protestene i Hong Kong 2019-20: En case-studie om hvordan protestene i Hong Kong er mobilisert, organisert og om de kan oppnå sosial forandring.

Abstract

Inspirert av den globale protestbølgen i 2019, har denne bacheloroppgaven som hensikt å forstå hvordan moderne protestbevegelser opererer, og effekten av sosiale medier i sosiale bevegelser. Oppgaven benytter en teori-bekreftende analyse, der både klassisk teori og nyere teori om sosiale bevegelser vil anvendes for å forklare problemstillingen. Casen som skal sammenlignes opp mot teorien er protestene i Hong Kong som oppsto sommeren 2019. Spesifikt vil det fokuseres på hvordan protestene er mobilisert, organisert og om protesten vil oppnå sosial forandring. Ved metoden for denne oppgaven vil det bli benyttet både primærkilder, som består av intervjuer og datasett, og sekundærkilder, som inkluderer avisartikler og tidsskriftsartikler. Hovedfunnet i denne oppgaven er at sosiale medier i stor grad har påvirket hvordan protestene i Hong Kong vellykket har mobilisert og organisert mange demonstranter, men at bruken av sosiale medier ikke har bidratt til å oppnå sosial forandring.

Inspired by the global protest wave of 2019, this bachelor thesis aims to understand how modern protest movements operate, and the effect of social media in social movements. The thesis uses a theory-affirming analysis, in which both classical theory and recent theory of social movements will be used to explain the research question. The case to be compared to the theory is the Hong Kong protests which occurred the summer of 2019. Specifically, the focus will be on how the protests are mobilized, organized and whether the protest will achieve social change. The method for this thesis will use both primary sources, which consist of interviews and data sets, and secondary sources, which include newspaper articles and journal articles. The main finding of this paper are that social media has largely influenced how the Hong Kong protests have successfully mobilized and organized many protesters, but that the use of social media has not helped to achieve social change.
