T Title: Communication between nurse and patient with cancer related psychological distress. Date : 01.06.2020 Authors: Synne Lerum og Emilie Haugen Supervisor: Elin Stikbakke Keywords (3-5): Cancer patients, psychological distress, Travelbee, communication, nurse-to-patients relations Number of pages/words: 46/10662 Number of appendix: 0 Short description of the bachelor thesis: Background: There are around 30 000 new cancer cases in Norway every year, and 1 out of 4 patients do not survive. Living with a deadly disease and not knowing how long one has left to live can cause psychological distress. Distress can evolve into psychological disease if left untreated. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to elucidate that there are many cancer patients who experience cancer related psychological distress, but don’t get caught up on for a number of reasons. In addition we are going to examine what kind of help the patients require and what nurses can do to relieve the psychological distress. Method: Six academic articles from healthcare-related databases have been used in this thesis. The main subject for these articles is how psychological distress is experienced by the patients, how nurses should communicate with cancer patients, and patient perspectives on the nursing they receive. Results: Cancer patients can be exposed to a stress reaction related to their diagnosis. About 50% experience psychological stress, and this number might be higher amongst patients with advanced cancer. Patients might need to talk to health care professionals about their psychological symptoms, but have trouble bringing it up. Good communication, education and support is among the most important parts of cancer treatment in hospital. Nurses need to be prepared and willing to talk about difficult subjects with the patients. Early screening and addressing issues might reduce psychological distress and serious psychological disorders. There are signs of differences between men and women when it comes to End-of-Life decisions. Conclusion: As a nurse, one has to use knowledge of communication such as relationship building, using one self in a therapeutic sense and active listening. One should also use mapping suitably and use next of kin and relatives as resources to ensure the best nurse-patient communication possible. Development of the field and service is perhaps an effective way of ensuring relief for the patient.
