Background: Type 1 diabetes is a chronic disease that often occurs in childhood and adolescence. Each year approximately 300 children and adolescents are diagnosed with diabetes in Norway. These young people address the difficulty to live with diabetes whilst many of them struggle to accept their illness and ignore it as part of their lives. Purpose: The purpose of this literature study is to investigate how nurses can help young diabetics, who do not accept their illness, to increase their level of compliance. This can help prevent late complications and reduce unnecessary hospital admissions. Method: This thesis is a literature study. The five articles were of qualitative studies and considered relevant to answering the question. Results: The findings identified included the challenges of living with diabetes, the need for knowledge, communication and information. Conclusion: In order to increase compliance, there was a desirable need for the nurse to have high competence, sufficient knowledge and that the information was adapted to the individual. Confidence and predictability between the nurse and the patient can cause the youth awareness to be open about their illness, as well as accepting to live with their diabetes.
