Kulturminner og kulturmiljøer regnes som viktige deler av vår felles hukommelse. Begge deler skal forvaltes til beste for framtidige generasjoner. Mange aktører fra ulike samfunnsområder har interesser i hvordan kulturmiljøet ivaretas, hvilke endringer som tillates og hvilke historier som fortelles. Slik kan man si at kulturminner representerer både historier fra den gang kulturminnet var i bruk og historier om ulike samtiders bruk av dem før og etter at de ble vernet. Hvilke historier blir fortalt, hvem bestemmer hvilke historier som skal fortelles, og hvordan tilrettelegges kulturminnene nettopp for å fortelle de utvalgte historiene?

Iscenesettelsen av kulturminner kan kalles kulturarvproduksjon. Produktet kan sammenliknes med en teaterforestilling eller en musikkproduksjon, der materielle og levende aktører regisseres for å få fram et ønsket uttrykk.

Cité de Carcassonne ligger i regionen Languedoc-Roussillon i Sør-Frankrike og står på Unescos verdensarvliste. I avhandlingen analyseres byen som kulturarvproduksjon gjennom ulike faglige perspektiver.

Cité de Carcassonne er et attraktivt turistmål og spiller en viktig rolle i den lokale turistindustrien. Byen er også sentral for den lokale identiteten og mentalhistoriene som representerer immaterielle verdier. Hvordan kulturmiljøet ivaretas, tilrettelegges og hvordan turistene selv opplever møtet med byen er et viktig perspektiv i undersøkelsen.

Avhandlingen studere samspillet mellom lokal næringsutvikling, turisme, historiebruk, kulturminnevern og kulturminneforvaltning og søker å belyse globale utfordringer med utgangpunkt i et lokalt eksempel. Avhandlingen synliggjør noen aktører som har vært aktive i kulturarvproduksjonen i Cité de Carcassonne og skisserer et historisk rammeverk som disse aktørene har vært virksomme innenfor. Aktører og prosesser langt utenfor Languedoc-Roussillons grenser har vært medvirkende til at byen framstår slik den gjør i dag.

There’s gold in them there stones. Cultural heritage production and the experience of the medieval town of Cité de Carcassonne.

Cultural heritage and cultural environments are considered an important part of our common memory, which both should be responsibly managed for future generations. Many actors from different social areas are interested in how the cultural environment is preserved, what changes that should be allowed, and which histories are told. Cultural monuments represent stories from when they were in use as well as the story of different contemporary use before and after they were protected. What histories are told, who decides which stories to tell, and how are the cultural monuments organized and managed to tell the selected stories?

Staging of cultural monuments can be labelled cultural heritage production. It can be compared to a theatrical performance, or a musical production, in which material culture and living actors play together to form the product desired.

The medieval town of Cité de Carcassonne in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France is the case of the dissertation. It has been signed on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

The town is an attractive tourist destination and plays an important role in the local tourism industry. The town also play a key role in the local identity and mental history of the region which represents intangible values. How the cultural environment is safeguarded, managed, and how the tourists experience the town is an important perspective in the analysis. The dissertation throw light upon the interaction between local business development, tourism, uses of history, cultural heritage protection and cultural heritage management with the ambition to study a global challenge based on a local example.

Using an interdisciplinary perspective, the town is studied as cultural heritage production. The dissertation highlights some actors who have been active in this production and outlines the historical frameworks where the production has taken place. Actors and processes far beyond Languedoc-Roussillon's borders have been operative in making the town’s appearance today.
