Fuel components and valuable chemicals, such as the monoaromatic hydrocarbons benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX), can be produced directly from renewable biomass through catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP). However, due to biomass having high oxygen contents and being severely deficient in hydrogen, the hydrocarbon yields are low. In order for the bio-oils produced by CFP to become an economically viable source of carbon-neutral fuels and platform chemicals, the hydrocarbon yields must be increased. In this project, catalytic fast co-pyrolysis (co-CFP) of biomass (spruce and straw) and plastics (polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP)) were conducted in a tandem micro-reactor to improve the yields of BTX. The effects of different temperatures, catalyst/feedstock ratios, different catalysts, catalyst crystal sizes, and different biomass/plastic combinations on the product distributions were studied. CFP of biomass and plastics was also carried out in a 2-step process, where the catalytic conditions were controlled independently of the pyrolysis process. Methods and procedures were developed to facilitate the experiments, and to quantitatively analyze the production of BTX, ethylene, and propylene in a GC/MS coupled to the reactor system. Multiple relationships between process conditions and BTX yields were observed, and the optimal conditions found were applied to the co-CFP of biomass/plastic mixtures. The result quality indicated that the methods developed were successful in monitoring the processes and producing repeatable results. It was demonstrated that the production of monoaromatics was possible through both 1-step and 2-step CFP processes, and that the addition of plastics in the feedstock mixture significantly enhanced the production of BTX. The highest BTX yield obtained during co-CFP was 15 C%, which was achieved from a 1:1 mixture of spruce and PE at 600°C. Synergy between plastics and biomass was observed, and it was shown to be higher for PP than for PE. Co-CFP with PP improved BTX and olefin yields by 20% and 13%, respectively. Both 2-step (ex situ) processes, and co-pyrolysis of biomass with plastic feedstocks, are subjects which require further study. In order for CFP to become a viable way of producing biofuels and biochemicals, the process must be further tailored, which is possible in 2-step processes. Hydrocarbon yields must be improved as well, and for this, co-pyrolysis with plastics show great promise.
