Background: There is not enough focus on secondary traumatic stress among nurses. Nurses will face the traumatized patient regardless of work-related situations and thus face incidents that can be potentially traumatic. A natural part of the job as a nurse is to show compassion and empathy. This can also make us vulnerable. Aim: The intention of this thesis is to study how secondary traumatic stress can affect nurses Method: The thesis is based on a literature study with research-based knowledge. Both quantitative and qualitative research have been used. Relevant databases for structured searches are: Cinahl, Embase and Medine. Results: The result of the thesis are based on symptoms of secondary traumatic stress. The symptoms presented are: Sleep difficulties and irritability, emotional fatigue and avoidance. These three categories are all in the selected articles and have a significant impact on the nurses. Conclusion: Secondary traumatic stress is characterized by symptoms similar to the main traumatized. Increased effects on sleep and irritability, emotional exhaustion and avoidance are consistently found in the thesis’s selected studies. There is a need for more focus and openness about secondary traumatic stress among nurses, Age and experience affect the mastery of situations that may be traumatizing. There is also a need for more research on secondary traumatic stress among nurses.
