Background: In 2011 the number of children who had parents with an alcohol problem in Norway, was approximately 90 000 (Torvik og Rognmo, 2011). There is, in addition, not enough information of signs and symptoms nurses can observe in children that live with an alcohol problem in their home. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to search for and find which and what kind of symptoms that can be seen in children that live with one or more alcoholic parents. Method: The study is a literature study, where it has been searched for articles, from multiple databases, that could answer the thesis. Result: There has been findings in this study that imply that there are symptoms within psychological health and within the relationship between children and parents. Several symptoms reappeared in all articles, such as risk factors, communication, shame, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and self-regulating. Conclusion: Several signs and psychological dysfunctions can be categorized as symptoms of children living with alcoholic parents. Through the study it has become clear that one can divide several observable symptoms into two groups; psychological health and the relationship between children and parents.
