Hvorfor sa USA nei til å bli med i Folkeforbundet?

Abstract

Temaet for denne bacheloroppgaven er USAs rolle i Versaillestraktaten og Folkeforbundet. Problemstillingen lyder derfor som følgende:

“Hvorfor sa USA nei til å bli med i Folkeforbundet”?

For å finne svar på dette spørsmålet så brukte jeg forskjellige typer bøker og litteratur. Både historiske bøker og memoarer til personer som var involvert. Disse ble brukt for å finne historiske fakta og for å sammenligne informasjon for å finne likheter/ulikheter.

Resultatene viser at årsakene til at USA sa nei er både sammensatte og kompliserte. Man kan ikke peke på en enkelt årsak og si at dette er grunnen til at de sa nei til medlemskap. Men noen av nøkkel årsakene som må nevnes er Artikkel X, president Wilson sitt dårlige forhold til Senatet og Kongressen. Hvordan et medlemskap i Folkeforbundet ville kunne undergrave både Kongressen og grunnloven. Også Monroe doktrinen var sentral i diskusjonene rundt avslaget. Det viste seg også at USA sitt avslag om medlemskap skulle på konsekvenser som gikk langt utenfor deres egne landegrenser.

The theme for this bachelor thesis is USA and their involvement in the Treaty of Versailles and the League of Nations. The research question is therefore as following:

Why did the U.S refuse to join The League of Nations?

To find answers to this questions I used different kinds of books and literature. Books containing historical facts and memoirs of people that were involved. These were used to find historical facts and to compare the informasjon in search of similarities/differences.

The results shows that the reasons for the U.S rejection are both complex and complicated. One cannot point to a single reason and claim that this is the one reason for their rejection. But some of the key features that needs to be mentioned are article X, president Wilsons poor relations with the Senate and the Congress. How a membership in the League of Nations would undermine congressional powers and the constitution.The Monroe doctrine was also a key element in the discussions surrounding the rejection. It also turned out that the U.S rejection would have consequences far beyond their own borders.
