Gaining knowledge of the isomerization mechanisms are of pivotal importance for stereochemically pure synthesis. Optically pure tartaric acid based surfactants are seen as important precursors for optically active superstructures. From these superstructures, liposomes are known canditates for drug delivery nanovessels in the human body. A number of optically pure reference compounds were synthesized and several analysis methods were outlined. A mechanistic route for formation of cyclic tartrimides in nonpolar solvents have been proposed on the background of various mechanistic assessment techniques.nb_NO
