Exploring the Randall-Sundrum Universe

In this thesis, we will explore the physics of warped extra dimensions. More specifically, we will concentrate on the model set forward by Lisa Randall and Raman Sundrum in their paper, "A Large Mass Hierarchy from a Small Extra Dimension".First, the basics of this model is worked out, and we show how the model gives a possible solution to the hierarchy problem.Then we will show how the Goldberger-Wise mechanism can stabilize the branes and avoid the large fine tuning required to achieve the correct inter-brane distances.We will then calculate the geodesic of a particle on a brane. We find that particles on the hidden brane can be expected to be unstable in the normal RS1 model. And we will then show how the Goldberger-Wise mechanism might provide a solution where particles can be bound in a stable manner on the hidden brane.We can then work out the corrections to Newtons law of gravitation, and show that they are of such a small magnitude that Newtons law is preserved. We will also see that the model gives rise to massive graviton-states that should be within the detection-limit of future accelerator-experiments.Finally, we will explore how bulk fermions behave in this model. After deriving the Dirac equation, we will see that the 5D profile of the fermion wave-function depends on the chirality and the 5D mass of the fermion. We also show how the model naturally gives rise to a large hierarchy of 4D fermion masses from a small hierarchy of 5D fermion masses.
