Prediction of seakeeping abilities for the free-fall lifeboat FF1200

In this thesis we have investigated seakeeping properties of Star CCM+. Star CCM+ is hoped to be used for simulations of the initial sailing phase of UMOE Schat Harding's new free fall lifeboat FF1200. It is a critical time as a lifeboat resurface from a launch and is starting its flight from the offshore installation. In the worst case scenarios, there will be strong winds and large waves pushing the boat towards the installation. It is these kinds of scenarios that are interesting to assess on the computer, but before these kind of simulations can take place, the accuracy of the simulations has to be validated. This has been done by a series of flat-water and wave cases which has been compared to similar tests in the towing tank and by using ShipX, which is another simulation program. Methods for automatically manoeuvring the boat with an autopilot has also been tested.
