Hillforts are located on hilltops, heights and rocks, where it is easy to create defences in the landscape. Datings of hillforts in Norway and Sweden show that they were used between the Bronze Age and the Middle Ages. In this thesis I have investigated the characteristics of nine of the eleven hillforts in the Steinkjer municipality, Nord-Trøndelag, examining how they are located in the landscape, and focusing particularly on their military-like properties. The research consisted of surveys and analyses through mapping, including the use of ArcGis. The results of this research show that hillforts in general have strong defence characteristics and are not randomly placed in the terrain.nb_NO
