The vast majority of the political responses we have seen in the European countries in the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2007-2008 can be categorized as austerity measures. Despite a lack of results and an increasing amount of critical voices the European governments have shown little will to change their path. In this study, I examine why we to such a little degree have seen traditional left-wing policy responses to the financial crisis. This study seeks to examine this issues by testing several different hypotheses about what has happened to the left-wing in Europe. The study finds that traditional left-wing policies are still valid in the modern financial picture and that left-wing parties have been in political power but still chosen not to introduce traditional left-wing policy responses. The study argues that the reasons to this is because the traditional left-wing parties in Europe has abandoned much of their traditional roots in several policy fields, including economics. Therefore, it is not very surprising that even though traditional left-wing parties have been in political power, they have not introduced traditional left-wing policies in response to the financial crisis.nb_NO
