Abstract
Petroleum resources can be a source to increased government revenue, which can be used to counteract poverty. The Norwegian petroleum management model is one of the many reasons why Norway has succeeded in converting their petroleum resources into long term development of the Norwegian society. This model of petroleum administration involves the creation of three institutions that separate the political, regulatory and commercial function. My thesis examines whether the Norwegian petroleum management model has an impact on poverty reduction or not. Employing a comparative case study of ten countries, I explore whether countries that have established the Norwegian model perform better in terms of poverty reduction than countries without this model. The results find no clear evidence in support of this. I will conclude that the institutional context of a country will be decisive for whether or not the Norwegian model of petroleum management can be associated with improved poverty reduction.
