Abstract
Introduction: There were 22,000 children receiving treatment in Norwegian hospitals in 2015. While there is a high threshold for admitting children to hospitals, it is done when there are no other justifiable alternatives. Children experience significant changes in their environment when they are admitted, which partially explain the feeling of lack of safety and increased stress the child experience. Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to identify factors to promote safety and comfort, and reduce stress through nursing of the child. The thesis will identify nursing measures which can be applied to reduce stress and discomfort in the child receiving treatment. Method: The thesis is a literature study. The thesis is based on five research papers and literature. The research papers are retrieved from the databases Cinahl Complete and PubMed. Search terms used are: `hospital’, `children’, `Children in hospital’, `pain’, `reduce fear’, `child development’, `pediatric nursing’, `nursing’, `nursing care’, `communication strategies’, `communication’, `distress’, `non-pharmacological methods’, `coping strategies’, `coping’ and `strategies’. Results: Findings show that the parents’ presence, adapted environment, good communication, and children’s methods of coping are important factors in ensuring children’s feeling of safety and comfort, and reducing stress. Conclusion: To assist children in coping with hospitalization, the nurse should have knowledge of children’s development, create an interplay with the child, and adapt the care to the child’s needs.
