Mode-Locked Thulium-Doped Fiber Laser Based on Highly Ge-Doped Fibers
(Chapter, 2014)We report SESAM mode-locked, linear cavity thulium-doped fiber laser based on a highly Ge-doped active fiber and operating in the anomalous dispersion regime at 1.88 μm, producing 900-fs pulses amplified up to the 3.7-nJ energy. -
Superfluidity breakdown and multiple roton gaps in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice
(Journal article, 2014)We investigate the superfluid phases of a Rashba spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate residing on a two-dimensional square optical lattice in the presence of an effective Zeeman field Ω. At a critical value Ω=Ωc, ... -
Magnetization Dissipation in Bulk Ferromagnets and Ferromagnetic Quantum Dots
(Master thesis, 2014)We study the magnetization dynamics of a nano-scale ferromagnet. We show that the phenomenological Landau-Lifschitz-Gilbert predicts a damped precession of the magnetization. The ferromagnet is coupled to two large reservoirs ... -
Effective Lagrangians for quantum many-body systems
(Journal article; Peer reviewed, 2014)The low-energy and low-momentum dynamics of systems with a spontaneously broken continuous symmetry is dominated by the ensuing Nambu-Goldstone bosons. It can be conveniently encoded in a model-independent effective field ... -
Improving Accuracy of Computational Light Scattering Simulations by Improved Numerical Integration
(Master thesis, 2014)Numerical integration plays an important role in many large scale physics simulations, yet the accuracy of such computations are often overlooked when the integrator routine is implemented---if the integration result itself ... -
Producing tubes of a droplet in an emulsion with surface particles at the interface
(Master thesis, 2014)The aim of the work done in connection to this thesis was to find different methods with which long tubes of one liquid suspended in another can be made (an emulsion). Various liquids (silicone oil, castor oil, diethyl-phtalate, ... -
Superconducting spintronics with magnetic domain walls
(Journal article, 2014)The recent experimental demonstration of spin-polarized supercurrents offers a venue for establishment of a superconducting analog to conventional spintronics. Whereas domain-wall motion in purely magnetic structures is a ... -
The Homotopy Theory of (∞,1)-Categories
(Master thesis, 2014)The homotopy category of a stable (∞,1)-category can be endowed with a triangulated structure. The main objective of this thesis is to give a proof of this fact. First it will be discussed some ideas of higher category ... -
Red versus blue light illumination in hexyl 5-aminolevulinate photodynamic therapy: the influence of light color and irradiance on the treatment outcome in vitro
(Journal article; Peer reviewed, 2014)Abstract. Hexyl 5-aminolevulinate (HAL) is a lipophilic derivative of 5-aminolevulinate, a key intermediate in biosynthesis of the photosensitizer protoporphyrin IX (PpIX). The photodynamic efficacy and cell death mode ... -
An acoustical study of trombone performance, with special attention to auditory feedback deprivation
(Master thesis, 2014)When discussing how instruments work and how performers play them, the matter can be viewed from the standpoint of the musician or the scientist. In an attempt to bridge the gap between what science and musical experience ... -
Atomic-resolution elemental mapping of precipitates in a 7449 aluminium alloy
(Journal article, 2014)The high-strength weldable 7xxx series of aluminium alloys are of great importance to the aeronautics industry. Only recently, the complex structures of the AlZnMg hardening precipitates have been solved by HAADFSTEM imaging ... -
Spin supercurrent, magnetization dynamics, and φ -state in spin-textured Josephson junctions
(Journal article, 2014)The prospect of combining the dissipationless nature of superconducting currents with the spin polarization of magnetic materials is interesting with respect to exploring superconducting analogs of topics in spintronics. ... -
Edge-modified zigzag-shaped graphene nanoribbons: structure and electronic properties
(Journal article; Peer reviewed, 2014)Control of the band gap of graphene nanoribbons is an important problem for the fabrication of effective radiation detectors and transducers operating in different frequency ranges. The periodic edge-modified zigzag-shaped ... -
Accumulated Plastic Strain Program
(Master thesis, 2014)In this thesis we will look at the implementation and results of the APS program. The program computes the accumulated plastic strain in a umbilical tube for the deformations axial tension, bending and internal pressure. ... -
Development of a Smartphone-based diagnostic Tool for Jaundice
(Master thesis, 2014)Jaundice is the cause of an estimated 114,100 deaths among newborn annually. Most of these deaths occur in the poorest regions of the world where current diagnostic technologies are too expensive. In this thesis, several ... -
Comparing an Analytical Cascade Spectrum of High Energy Gamma Rays to those found in a Monte Carlo simulation
(Master thesis, 2014)In this thesis we consider the analytical model for electromagnetic cascades initiated by very high energy gamma rays due to Berezinskii. We compare the analytical prediction that the spectral energy distribution is described ... -
Pulsed Laser Deposition of Zinc Sulfide Thin Films on Silicon: The influence of substrate orientation and preparation on thin film morphology and texture
(Master thesis, 2014)The effect of orientation and preparation of silicon substrates on the growth morphology and crystalline structure of ZnS thin films deposited by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) has been investigated through scanning electron ... -
Improved domain-wall dynamics and magnonic torques using topological insulators
(Journal article, 2014)We investigate the magnetization dynamics that arises when a thin-film ferromagnet is deposited on a topological insulator (TI), focusing in particular on domain-wall motion via current and the possibility of a spin-wave ... -
Superconducting proximity effect in silicene: Spin-valley-polarized Andreev reflection, nonlocal transport, and supercurrent
(Journal article; Peer reviewed, 2014)We theoretically study the superconducting proximity effect in silicene, which features massive Dirac fermions with a tunable mass (band gap), and compute the conductance across a normal-superconductor (N-S) silicene ... -
TEM characterization of Cr-doped ZnS Thin Films for Solar Cell applications
(Master thesis, 2014)The morphology of three Cr-doped zinc sulfide thin films, one deposited by molec-ular beam epitaxy (MBE) and two by pulsed laser deposition (PLD), have beenstudied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Investigations ...
