In this work, the dissolution behaviour of sintered barium titanate specimens in aqueous solutions was investigated for the purpose of evaluating barium titanate's prospects for biomaterial applications. Barium titanate is a piezoelectric ceramic, which are candidates for hard-tissue biomaterials due to reported favourable interactions between bone-generating cells and the charged surfaces of piezoelectric biomaterials.
As part of the soaking studies, a setup was devised to investigate barium titanate's dissolution behaviour in the presence of flowing liquid. The introduction of liquid flow to biomaterial dissolution studies is a step towards better simulating the chemical environment biomaterials will face if implanted into a body.
The purpose of this thesis was to compare the barium titanate's dissolution behaviour in the presence of liquid flow to the its dissolution behaviour in still liquid, and the surface chemistry of barium titanate's dissolution process in general. Additionally, BT's piezoelectric properties will be evaluated before and after soaking to see how it is affected by the soaking process.
In the soaking studies, the presence of flow did not have any significant effect on barium titanate's dissolution behaviour. Neither microstructure, surface composition, or piezoelectric behaviour were significantly different when compared to the static soaking study. The surface area of the BT specimens, the pH of the soaking media, and the formation of a protective surface layer were identified as the most significant parameters in controlling the extent of dissolution from the specimens.
Future investigations should work with increasingly complex soaking media to better simulate the chemical environment a biomaterial will actually have to withstand once implanted in a body. While the levels of barium leached in this study were below cytotoxicity, more research is needed to ensure the amount of leached barium remain at non-toxic levels in harsher soaking environments.
