Calcium alumina silicate hydrate (C-A-S-H) is the main hydration product formed in Portland and Portland composite cements and has therefore a governing impact on the strength and durability of the resulting concrete. One of the conventional methods to determine the composition of C-A-S-H in cementitious materials uses scanning electron microscopy, equipped with an energy dispersive spectroscopy detector (SEM-EDS) and relies on manual selection of point data. This approach is labour-intensive and subject to user bias. To address these limitations, this study aimed to develop an improved method for evaluating the C-A-S-H composition using SEM-EDS quantmaps, where all available pixel data is considered.By applying a set of filters we were able to effectively remove the unreacted phases and selected hydrates from the SEM-EDS quantmap data. A total of three independent sites seems to be sufficient to have a representative C-A-S-H composition. We focused on the main elemental ratios of C-A-S-H, i.e. Al/Ca, Ca/Si and Al/Si. For the Ca/Si the 25th percentile of the map scan data matches with the 5th percentile of the conventional method, while for the Al/Ca ratio, the 5th percentile of the map scan data agrees with the 50th percentile of the conventional method. The map scan method enables us to study the C-A-S-H composition not as a single value, but rather as a statistical distribution. The addition of pozzolanic supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) i.e., fly ash (FA) and volcanic pozzolan (VP), consistently resulted in increased Al/Ca and decreased Ca/Si values compared to a limestone (L) reference. The impact of curing temperature ultimately shows no effect.
