livet i havet.
Utgangspunktet for denne oppgaven er to utslipp
I oppgaven
dc.description.abstract | Plastic pellet emissions are one of the most extensive sources of plastic pollution in the marine
environment. The pellets are defined as microplastics and could thus potentially harm marine
life. However, the emissions provide an opportunity to examine how microplastics are
transported and degraded in the marine environment. This project is based on two emissions,
one in Durban, South-Africa in 2017, and one in Esbjerg, Denmark in 2020. The collected
pellets were used to study how plastic degrades in the marine environment, through the use of
scanning electron microscope (SEM). The project investigated whether the pellets came from
the two spills by comparing results from different analyses, and by searching for similarities
between appearances, types of polymer and additives from samples from South Africa and
Norway.
The pellets in the samples collected along the coast of South Africa varied in looks and degrees
of degradation. By using pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS), it was
determined that 25 of the samples contained polyethylene, one sample contained polypropylene
and one contained both polyethylene and polypropylene. Thermal desorption (TD) of pellets
from the samples showed that several pellets contained the same additives. The analyses
revealed that it was probable that seven of the analyzed pellets originated from the Durban
discharge. The remaining pellets were classified as coming from different spills and it was
concluded that there were pellets in the samples from at least three different spills, in addition
to the spill in Durban.
The samples collected along the coast of Norway had an appearance that corresponded to the
reference sample from the spill off the coast of Esbjerg. Py-GC-MS showed that all the analyzed
pellets consisted of isotactic polypropylene (iPP). Using TD, it was determined that there was
a compliance between which additive were added in the samples. This indicated that all the
pellets came from the spill outside of Esbjerg.
Examination of the degradation of plastics in SEM revealed that the pellets from the samples
collected in South Africa had different degrees of degradation, both chemical and mechanical.
Considering it was concluded that the samples contained pellets from at least three different
spills, the results could not be used to look at degradation over time. The pellets from the
samples in Norway were not as varied and most likely came from the same emissions. However,
the extent of the degradation was not sufficient to inform us of how the pellets degrade over
time. | |
