Nedgangen i partikkelkonsentrasjon
cellens mottatte elektriske energi.
dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this thesis is to extend a computer code by implementing the calculation of conservation equations over an industrial electrolysis cell for predicting
thermal effects on the cell as fast as possible. The aim is to enable the code being
used in industrial settings for predicting scenarios if specific operational strategies
are entered into the software.
A velocity field has been interpolated by a linear method and was implemented
into pre-written code by S.-T. Johansen (SINTEF). The pre-written code was
extended to take in computations for the conservation equation of temperature.
Run time measurements were conducted to determine the code’s pace and compared to real-time.
Results show that the interpolar velocity vectors represent the main trends of
what happens in a cell. The majority of undissolved alumina particles were found
to dissolve within 2-3 seconds in the electrolyte bath. The particle concentration
close to the bath walls at interpolar height was found to increase at a faster pace
than the concentration of undissolved alumina at the center of the cell. The solution of the energy conservation equation shows that feeding 5 kg/s of alumina
particles with feeding intervals of 60 seconds causes a loss of 21°C super heat.
Variations between temperature profiles measured at different locations in the
cell were observed. The heat loss from the electrolyte bath to the surroundings
was found to be significant compared to heat loss though cell walls and alumina
particle heating. At its fastest the code was measured to run at 80 seconds.
It is discussed that the interpolated velocity field does not represent the eddys in
the actual velocity field to a satisfactory degree. Alternative methods for interpolation and post-processing of the velocity data are considered. The decrease in
particle concentration in a cell beneath an anode was attributed to the increased
presence of eddys dispersing the particles. The loss of 21°C superheat is attributed
to the fed amount of alumina, the feeding interval, and the cell’s received electrical
power. In order to decrease the code run time it was proposed to implement a
different solving strategy for the conservation equations, in addition to avoiding
the use of large for-loops.
It was concluded that the interpolated velocity field is representative of the raw
data field. The concentration of undissolved alumina particles was found to increase at a more rapid pace at interpolar heights. Heat loss from the bath to the
surroundings is viewed as the largest contribution to heat loss. | |
