Sammendrag
1,3,5-Tris(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,3,5-triazinane (1), in the industry often referred to as "Triazine", is a widely used liquid H2S scavenger. The goal of the work presented in this dissertation was to examine the chemistry of its reaction with H2S, and to determine the efficiency of 1 and other potential scavengers in H2S removal.

It was found that two competing reactions take place when 1 is used as an H2S scavenger. One is the hydrolysis of the compound, in which ethanolamine (5) and formaldehyde is formed. The other reaction is the nucleophilic substitution of sulfur into the triazinane ring. By a combination of various NMR techniques, IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis, the latter reaction was found to proceed as follows:
