Donald Trump: The Populist President and Truth Social

Abstract

Denne oppgaven undersøker hvordan Donald Trumps bruk av Truth Social kan reflektere populisme, antielitisme, nasjonalisme, “sint» populisme, og til og med fasisme i perioden før, under og etter hans andre innsettelse som president i USA. Målet med denne oppgaven er å utforske om Trumps Truths kan defineres som populistisk, og om hans form for populisme kan sees på som å nærme seg fascisme. Samtidig forsøker oppgaven å undersøke om noen av hans innlegg viser motstridende tendenser slik som elitisme og støtte til demokratiske prosesser og verdier. Denne oppgaven behandler også hvorvidt Trumps bruk av Truth Social demonstrerer en glidende overgang fra populisme til fascisme slik enkelte forskere hevder, hvilket illustrerer den skiftende dynamikken til populisme, og at populismen kan ses på som en formskifter eller en kameleon.

This thesis examines how Donald Trump’s use of Truth Social could reflect populism, anti-elitism, nationalism, “angry” populism, and even fascism in the period before, during, and after his second inauguration as President of the United States. The goal of this thesis is to explore whether Trump’s Truths can be defined as populist, and whether his form of populism can be viewed as approaching fascism. At the same time, this thesis attempts to examine whether some of his posts show contradictory tendencies such as elitism or support for democratic processes and values. This thesis also addresses whether Trump’s use of Truth Social demonstrates a fluid transition from populism to fascism as some scholars claim, which illustrates the changing dynamics of populism, and that populism can be viewed as a shapeshifter or a chameleon.
