Abstract

This essay explores how a new generation of Irish authors deals with themes of female sexuality, gender and family roles, and the presence of pain and violence in their stories. Louise Nealon, Sally Rooney, Naoise Dolan and Caoilinn Hughes have all written short stories within the last decade that deal with these themes, which are analysed in light of the recent repeal of The Censorship of Publications Act, and the previous century’s culture of censorship.
