Ikonografi og identitet: En analyse av vestfrontskulpturen St. Denis.

Abstract

I denne oppgaven utforsker identiteten til skulpturen St. Denis, fra Nidarosdomens vestfront. Er det Reims' St. Nicasius, eller St. Denis av Paris? Første del av teksten ser oppgaven på datering og historisk kontekst for å komme frem til en plausibel datering av skulpturen. Gjennom en ikonografisk analyse av bekledningen og symboler diskuteres skulpturens referanser til norske helgener og andre bibelske skikkelser. Videre ser oppgaven på Norge og Frankrikes relasjoner på 1200-tallet, samt lokal helgendyrkelse, for å avgjøre hvilken helgen som er fremstilt. Helt til slutt blir muligheten for et polykromt utseende, utforsket.

In this thesis, the identity of the sculpture St. Denis, from the west front of Nidaros Cathedral, is explored. Is it Reims' St. Nicasius, or St. Denis of Paris? The first part of the text examines the dating and histoical context to arrive at a plausible dating of the sculpture. Through an iconographical analysis fo the clothing and symbols, the sculpture's references to Norwegian saints and other biblical figures are discussed. Further, the thesis looks at Norway and France's relations in the 13th century, as well as local saints worship, to determine which saint is depicted. Finally, the possibility of a polychrome appearance is explored.
