The Necessity of Starting Over - A Detour Through Weaving

Abstract

I denna essä skriver jag om hur mitt konstnärliga arbete har utvecklats i övergången från måleri till bildväv de senaste tre åren. Att gå bort från det medium där jag känner mig som mest trygg och istället utforska något nytt har varit ett nödvändigt sätt för mig att utveckla min konstnärliga process. I detta arbete har jag funnit en ny tentativ process där idéer föds ur arbetet och som ger utrymme för en dialog med materialet. I texten tar jag upp hur jag relaterar till Anni Albers och Magdalena Abakanowiczs arbeten, och kommer in på begreppet soft sculpture samt textilkonstens historia ur ett feministiskt perspektiv. I framtiden ser jag framför mig att jag kommer fortsätta med detta nya förhållningssätt till materiellt utforskande och ta det med in i måleriet.

In this essay I’m writing about how my artistic practice has developed through a transition from painting to weaving in the last three years. To move away from the medium I’m comfortable with and to explore something new has been a necessary way for me to develop my artistic process. In this new way of working I have found a process that feeds into new ideas and gives room for a dialogue with the material. I’m writing about how I relate my work to Anni Albers and Magdalena Abakanowicz’s artistic practices and introduce the concept of soft sculpture and a feminist perspective on the history of textile art. In the future I see myself continue this material exploration and bring this new approach to further develop my painting practice.
