This thesis explores the potential of digital solutions and how it can optimize port stay efficiency and cost for chemical tanker shipping companies, and what are the key barriers and success factors for their adoption, using Utkilen AS as a case study. The research examines how advanced technologies such as IoT, AI-driven optimization tools, and data analytics can enhance operational efficiency, reduce port stay durations, and minimize costs. It also highlights the environmental benefits of digitalization, including reduced fuel consumption and emissions, aligning with growing regulatory and customer demands for sustainability. The findings reveal that the success of digital initiatives relies heavily on human factors, including the early involvement of end users, comprehensive training, and strong leadership support. Challenges such as resistance to change, legacy system integration, and stakeholder misalignment were identified as significant barriers to digital adoption. However, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and clear communication can mitigate these obstacles and ensure successful implementation. Recommendations for shipping companies include prioritizing high-impact technologies, engaging end users in development, investing in ongoing training, and strengthening cybersecurity measures. The study underscores the strategic importance of digitalization in improving efficiency, enhancing competitiveness, and advancing sustainability within the maritime industry. Future research could focus on the long-term impacts of AI, blockchain integration, and digitalization's role in achieving broader environmental goals.
