Market dynamics and freight rate volatility in the LPG and Petrochemical shipping industry

Abstract

Denne oppgaven undersøker dynamikken av LPG- og det petrokjemiskeshippingmarkedet, med spesielt fokus på fraktratevolatilitet. Studiet analyserer nøkkelfaktorene, som råvarepriser, historiske og nåværende flåtedata og historiske fraktrater for å se hvilke faktorer som driver dynamikken i markedet. Studien har som mål å forstå hvordan variablene påvirker hverandre og markedet i helhet. Forskningen anvender statistiske analyser for å identifisere mønstre og korrelasjoner i markedet. Ved å bruke historiske data og bransjetrender tilbyr studien et rammeverk for å vurdere markedsforhold og forutsi volatiliteten til fraktratene. Oppgaven har to delforskningsspørsmål som blir brukt i forhold til problemstillingen: "Hvordan påvirker råvareprisene for propan og butan BLPG1 og BLPG3 rater?" og "Har råvarepriser eller ekspansjon i segmentenes verdensflåte størst innvirkning på fraktratene?" Først i oppgaven presenteres relevant teori for forskningen, før innsamlingen av data presenteres, deretter tolkes og analyseres og diskuteres. Dataene samles inn ved bruk av kun harde data fra en kvantitativ metode.

This thesis examines the dynamics of the LPG and petrochemical shipping market, particularly focusing on freight rate volatility. The research analyzes the key component variables, such as commodity prices, historical and current fleet data, and historical freight rates to uncover factors driving the dynamics of the market. The goal of the research is to understand how variables interact and influence the market. The research employs statistical analysis to identify patterns and correlations within the market. Leveraging historical data and industry trends the study offers a framework to assess market conditions and predict the volatility of freight rates. The thesis has two sub-research questions used in regard to the problem statement: “How does commodity prices for propane and butane affect BLPG1 and BLPG3 rates?” and “Does commodity prices or expansion in the segments world fleet have the biggest impact on the freight rates?” Firstly, in the thesis the relevant theory for the research is presented, before the collecting of data is presented, then interpreted and analyzed and discussed. The data is collected, using solely hard data from a quantitative methodology.
