ABSTRACT: The dominance of 3-D models and extensive data lists has confined Building Information Modelling (BIM) within the construction industry. However, the term "BIM" is often misunderstood, limiting its perception as solely a design software. In contrast, Visualisation, Information Integration, and Automation (VIA) offer a broader framework, especially applicable to decision making in design and construction project management. This study adopts a comprehensive approach, including surveys of Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) certified professionals, interviews with VDC mentors, and a decade-long literature review. Through these methods, the research examines the misconceptions surrounding BIM and explores the potential of VIA to improve design and construction processes. The findings suggest that VIA offers a more comprehensive solution for enhancing project management in construction than today’s prevalent use of BIM.
