Abstract
In collaboration with the Shackbuilder organisation we have taken on the task of designing and building a crèche in the informal settlement of Ethembeni, Cape Town.
A crèche is a preschool. In South Africa these are often private institutions funded by the government, offering day-care and education to children from the age of 18 months to six years.
The project is initiated by Shackbuilder and the local community and is funded by the Shackbuilder through crowd sourcing and a handful of local patrons. This means that the project is limited by a modest budget, and a success is reliant on low-cost.
Spending a month in Cape Town, we worked closely with both the Shackbuilder and the local community of Ethembeni and met with local authorities and collaborators to gain the necessary insights to develop the design.
The Shackbuilder will bring the proposed design to the municipality for approval in June 2023. The construction of the project is expected to commence in September 2023, and will be executed by the competent, but informally trained builders of the Shackbuilder.
