Home and garden at Strømme - nursinghome and kindergarten in harmony with the local community

Abstract

This thesis project seeks to critique the role and architecture of institutional buildings in contemporary society. This thesis will explore an alternative model for the architecture of an institution. To do this we propose to work with the program of a kindergarten and a nursing home at Strømme within the suburban extension of Kristiansand. The site is located adjacent to a cluster of existing institutional buildings. The program and site are developed from a proposed development by the Kristiansand municipality. The proposition’s form is based on the idea of a home and a garden, with the users’ living conditions as the main parameter of design. Our thesis takes the form of a design proposal for a kindergarten and a nursing home within a wider urban planning and landscape proposal. This booklet summarizes the critique, architectural thesis idea, and architectural and urban project.
